Google Ads personalization playbook
This playbook turns a Google Ads account into a landing page personalization plan: which ad groups deserve their own message, what to change on the page for each, how to tag the URLs and how to check the result.
When to use it: Use it when several ad groups or keyword themes send traffic to the same landing page and the page cannot speak to all of them at once.
1. Group keywords by intent, not by match type
- 1Export the search terms report for the last full month and sort by clicks.
- 2Group search terms into intent themes: problem ("reduce churn"), category ("churn software"), competitor ("[competitor] alternative"), feature ("churn prediction API") and price ("cheap", "free", "pricing").
- 3Keep only themes that each get enough clicks to matter to you. Merge the long tail into the closest theme.
- 4Write down the promise each theme expects to see in the first five seconds.
2. Plan the page per theme
| Intent theme | Example search terms | Headline angle | Supporting line | Primary CTA | Proof to show |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Problem | [reduce churn saas] | Name the problem in their words | How the product solves it | [See how it works] | [Short customer quote, if you have one] |
| Category | [churn software] | Category + your differentiator | Who it is for | [Start free trial] | [Integration logos you really support] |
| Competitor | [competitor alternative] | Why teams switch | What carries over | [Compare plans] | [Comparison page link] |
| Price | [churn tool pricing] | Transparent pricing promise | What the free or entry plan includes | [See pricing] | [Plan limits] |
3. Tag every final URL
- 1Use auto-tagging (gclid) for Google Analytics and add a tracking template for UTM parameters: {lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}.
- 2Use the same lowercase, hyphenated campaign names you use everywhere else. See the UTM naming convention template.
- 3Check one live ad per campaign by clicking it and confirming the parameters arrive on the page.
4. Guardrails
- Never promise in the headline what the page and product do not deliver.
- Keep restricted words (competitor trademarks, claims legal has not approved) out of every variant.
- Keep the original page as the fallback for unknown or empty keywords.
- Change one element at a time if you want to know what made the difference.
5. Measure
- Compare conversion rate per intent theme against a control group that sees the original page.
- Wait for the sample size you set in advance before calling a winner.
- Feed winning angles back into ad copy so ad and page keep saying the same thing.
Automate this in GetIntent
GetIntent's Google Ads integration (Agency and Enterprise plans) syncs campaigns, ads and keywords from a manager account and rewrites the headline, supporting copy and CTA to match the clicked ad. On every plan, GetIntent reads utm_term and utm_campaign from your tagged URLs, applies your brand voice and restricted keywords, and falls back to the original page when it cannot personalize.
